If you found yourself in an elevator with Kerry and you kindly asked her to describe herself before reaching the second floor, she would first think, thank goodness you’re talking because she dislikes awkward silence, and then Kerry would reply: “I think, I do and I give back.” Ding.

Barbara Franks, Neech Tlaa, Mother of the Shoreline, Tlingit (Raven/Coho) - Our Guiding Light
In a matter of two days, lives were changed. Our family of four became a family of two. One by cancer on 12/16/97 fighting for his last breath, and our youngest son purposely ended his own life on 12/14/97 at 23 years of age. The year was a time that was filled with the stigma and taboo that still exists today 20 years later. As a survivor I believe that we be armed with the knowledge of the unknown. I advocate that "lived experience" is crucial.
The last seven years of the healing journey includes being on the Governor's Statewide Suicide Prevention Council, a member of the Alaska Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a seat on the Alaska Psychiatric Institute, and serve as a consultant to several entities.
Barbara Franks is a Master Trainer on safeTALK and a Consulting Trainer in ASIST, two intervention models. She has international exposure through her presentations and as a panelist. Her dedication and outreach has touched over thousands of lives through her volunteer efforts with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and joining other issues that lead to suicide i.e., drugs & alcohol abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault. Her remaining son is her light to reach for the sky so he knows he did not lose his mother after losing his brother and father.
