Karen volunteers because...
The reason I mentor is that I have had to deal with so much stigma, loneliness and rejection during the worst times of my life dealing with Bipolar Disorder & other mental illnesses. I have fought back from the brink of suicide more times that I care to mention. Suicidal ideation is scary. However, when I started to come up with a plan, I knew I was in trouble. A long time ago, when I was extremely ill, two friends from my high school supported me for after seeing some desperate posts on Facebook. I wouldn’t be alive today without that support. I had terrible issues with my family (still do) that most don't understand. I wish there were people back in my teenage years that could have helped, but there simply was not. I felt that no one cared. People shunned me. I want more than anything to help ease the pain for people, to be there and to care.
