Spend $10 Less on Halloween & Save Lives
MAKE THE PLEDGE - By joining our FACEBOOK EVENT, you pledge to spend $10 less on Halloween this year and donate your $10 savings to the Hope Xchange Nonprofit's suicide prevention programs to help us save lives.
The Scary Facts about Halloween Spending
As we count down to Halloween this year, Americans will no doubt spend at least $6.9 BILLION on this holiday, the amount last year, with $74.34 the average amount spent on candy, costumes, and decorations. [source: CNN.com]
Yes, for ONE day, we will spend the equivalent of over SIX PERCENT of our country's mental health budget for the YEAR. While we're out celebrating this holiday, people are committing suicide: every 41 seconds someone takes their own life and every 42 seconds someone is left wondering why.
Imagine how many lives we could save if we all spent just $10 less - what's more important than saving lives?
If you believe that preventing over 42,000 Americans from taking their own life each year is everyone's responsibility, we ask that you join us this Halloween and donate $10 that you would otherwise spend on candy, costumes, decorations and parties to our suicide prevention programs.
Personal note from Natasha Tracy, Award-Winning Mental Health Advocate, Bipolar Author & Hope Xchange Friend
Six years ago I was denied psychiatric treatment. I never thought that could happen as I was both severely suicidal and had bipolar disorder.
But I was told I was untreatable. I was told that because I had tried every treatment, and they had all failed, there was no point in me seeing a psychiatrist. Shortly after this, one day in my kitchen, I decided to kill myself.
I knew how much agony I was in and I knew I couldn’t live with it. And I knew if I couldn’t see a psychiatrist then I couldn’t get help, and if I couldn’t get help then I couldn’t get better, and if I couldn’t get better, then what was the point?
I had no hope that anyone could help me – ever. Surely if a psychiatrist had written me off, it was time to die.
I did not die; but, I did learn. I learned no one who is suicidal wants to die. What people want and what people need is hope. They need a place and people to turn to who can carry their hope when they can’t. They need options outside of death that they think can help. They need to talk to those who have been there and are grateful to have survived.
In short, they need all the services Hope Xchange provides. Because turning to hope helps a person turn away from death and that will save precious lives.

"Natasha Tracy doesn't judge. She totally gets it's not her calling to figure out if someone deserves something, because we all do, particularly those coping with bipolar and depression and struggling to stay alive. Natasha lifts up the fallen, restores the broken and heals the hurting; and, she does so authoritatively, compassionately and articulately with a practicality and honesty."
