Let the conversation begin.
Bipolar-to-Bipolar Mentoring, A Free Mental Wellness Program by Hope Xchange Nonprofit, Restores Hope, Renews Purpose & Saves Lives - A Testimonial
Hope Xchange Nonprofit offers a free and confidential peer mentoring program, Hope for Bipolars, for those who are struggling and want to communicate to someone who walks in their shoes, whether it be via email, phone, SKYPE, whatever mode of communication works best for the individual being mentored.
In our program, balanced volunteers living "successfully" with a bipolar diagnosis virtually mentor those who aren't quite yet there but will get there. Our mentors come from all walks of life - bipolar life coaches, successful business people, Bipolar Facebook Group Administrators and stay-at-home mums - but what they all have in common is that they too have been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. While it is not a substitute for therapy, our program works.
As founder of Hope Xchange and, while I'm good at and honestly enjoy mentoring, I heretofore have not been a mentor simply because I don't have the bandwidth. Today, however, that has changed. We have been overwhelmed with mentor requests - 14 pending - that we simply cannot move fast enough to get to, particularly given how challenging it has been to find suitable bipolar mentors who are willing to volunteer their time to help our community.
Below I share a letter I received from Michael, an amazingly brilliant and articulate 62-year old who had lost his way and was living without hope and without purpose. At the outset of our first call, a two hour phone conversation, he started by saying he had given up; and, at the end of our call, he not only expressed an interest in being a mentor but he wanted to volunteer for our nonprofit. And, today I am proud to call him my friend.
He is also the reason that we can now be found at hopeforbipolars.org. He read a guest blog post on natashatracy.com that I wrote sharing my own personal story on 3 suicide attempts and struggling with my bipolar diagnosis, but Michael couldn't later recall how to spell our name. As a result, he almost gave up on reaching out to us for help when his wife couldn't find us online. We want to be found for those who are reaching out to us. We take our mission to prevent suicide in the bipolar community very seriously.
Mentoring Lifts the Fallen, Restores the Broken & Heals the Hurting - Michael's Testimonial
I am so glad that I found your site, Hope Xchange. I reached out to you and you were there for me pretty quickly. That blew me away. Rarely has that ever happened to me in the twenty years that I have had this disease.
As you know having a Bipolar disease and the loneliness and loss of friends and family can be so hard to deal with. I have lost so much in my life. My profession, my financial stability, my dignity and so much more. I have the misfortune of cycling every day and cannot work.
Your call meant so much to me. I rarely ever get phone calls and yours was a breath of fresh air. I smiled for the first time in such a very long time. I look forward to our next phone conversation and I will be honored to help you and the organization in any way I can.
I thank you with all my heart and look forward to being in service to Hope Xchange and its members.
Sincerely ~ Michael
